USB Memory Sticks
Also known as USB Pens, USB
Memory Drives. etc. these can be plugged into the rectangular USB sockets on the
computer case and used to save your files to. The most recent of the University
computers have these sockets on the front for easy access, but on some of the
older computers they are on the back next to the network socket (where the blue
cable connects). You can create and delete folders on the
USB stick just as
you do in your network area ("H drive"), and save and open files directly to the
stick.
Saving to a USB Memory Stick
- When you plug your USB stick into a
computer for the first time it may take 30 seconds or so to examine it
and ready the computer to use it.
- On University computers the USB stick is
usually assigned the letter D as its drive letter.
- A window may automatically open showing
the contents of the USB stick or you may be prompted with a choice - if
so choose to "Open folder to view files with Windows Explorer".

 |
| |
|
- If nothing appears after 30 seconds or
so, go to the Start Menu and click on "My Computer".
- In the "My Computer" window a USB stick
is usually refered to as "Removable Disk (D:)". Double-click on this to
view the contents of the USB stick.

Safely Removing a
USB Memory Stick
USB devices are "hot swappable"
which means they can be plugged in or removed at anytime without having to
restart the computer - however it is best to use the "safely remove" option as
shown below:
Removing a USB Memory
Stick
- The best way to safely remove a USB
stick, rather than just pulling it out of the port on the PC, is to
right click on the icon that represents the USB storage device (shown ).
This icon appears in the task tray (bottom right corner of the screen
near the clock). Right click on this icon and select ‘Safely
Remove Hardware’.
|
 |
- When the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ box
appears, click on Stop and then Ok.
- A message will appear on the bottom
right of the PC telling you that you can now safely remove the
device.
